Reality Check on Unified Communications

Even as “first-generation” IP Telephony rollouts get under way, the industry is moving to the next phase of the convergence revolution: Unified Communications. Many of the technologies that are included in Unified Communications are familiar—messaging, conferencing, collaboration and IM/presence. But UC departs from the traditional vision of delivering voice communications via a dedicated application.

So what is Unified Communications—what are the basic concepts and what is coming into the marketplace? This session will help you understand Unified Communications, what will be available soon and from whom, and what capabilities may be farther down the road.

KEY QUESTIONS:

  • What does UC actually mean? What elements compose a UC solution?
  • What new value do vendors propose to deliver via UC?
  • What vendors will play in this marketplace?
  • Where—and when—will enterprises apply UC?
  • How will UC change today's approach to enterprise communications technology and services?
  • What current apps/systems are prerequisites for migrating to UC?

Speakers:

Jim Burton, President, CT Link
Charlie Henderson, Director of Marketing, Aastra Intecom
Aaron Williams, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Nokia
Jeff Ridley, Director of Application Products, ShoreTel
David Leach, Senior Public Consultant, Siemens

10:30–11:30 am

Enhancing VOIP for Unified Communications

What are the steps required to enhance an existing VOIP infrastructure so that it can support Unified Communications? And how does this integrate with other applications? In this session, a panel of IP-PBX suppliers will outline the steps for evolving PBXs and IP-PBXs to deliver Unified Communications integrated with business processes and applications.

KEY QUESTIONS:

  • What elements of an IP Telephony infrastructure will also be used in a UC deployment? What “traditional” telephony elements might become obsolete in a UC future?
  • What’s the future of the PBX/IP-PBX in a UC migration?
  • What new sorts of infrastructure elements might have to be added to an IP Telephony implementation to support UC? What servers, applications or other elements that already exist in the enterprise must be integrated with the IP Telephony elements?
  • How should your plans or potential plans for Unified Communications affect your plans for rolling out IP Telephony?

Speakers:

Marty Parker, Principal, Communication Perspecitves
Cary Fitzgerald, VP Product Development, Adomo
Charlie Henderson, Director of Marketing, Aastra Intecom
Jeff Ridley, Director of Application Products, ShoreTel
David Leach, Senior Public Consultant, Siemens

Merging Mobility and UC

What are the best UC solutions for mobile employees and how are they delivered? Can a mobile device replace the need for desktop phones, for some or all employees? In this session, a panel of wireless carriers, VOIP and desktop application vendors will highlight their best solutions for mobile employees, and how those integrate with the office systems.

KEY QUESTIONS:

  • What UC capabilities are available on mobile devices/services today? Can these integrate with the IP Telephony and UC infrastructures, and do they need to?
  • What are the key impediments (such as bandwidth or battery life) to end users enjoying the same functionality on a wireless UC application as its wired counterpart?
  • Can wireless UC solutions be implemented in conjunction with the enterprise infrastructure, or will service providers only offer these as their own standalone services?
  • Are video and collaboration solutions viable UC applications for mobile users today?

Speakers:

Jim Burton, President, CT Link
Charlie Henderson, Director of Marketing, Aastra Intecom
Cary Fitzgerald, VP Product Development, Adomo
Aaron Williams, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Nokia

UC ROI: The Search Is on

Enterprises are searching to demonstrate the return on investment for Unified Communications. What metrics are available to allow management to prove and track ROI for UC? On this panel, representatives from leading providers will offer their advice and suggestions and will describe real-life reference cases.

KEY QUESTIONS:

  • Where are there cost reductions from UC?
  • Where are there provable revenue and profit increases attributable to UC?
  • Is there more ROI if we integrate UC into business processes?
  • Is it possible to measure the returns from UC? Is there anything to learn from call centers' ROI?
